Etiquette for an Artist Working on an Archaeological Site
I drew a blank in June 2022 when I googled ‘Etiquette for Artists working on an Archaeological excavation site’. I was preparing for my first residency at Cookham and wanted to learn from other artist’s experiences of working alongside archaeologists.
During my Residency at Cookham, over four dig seasons 2022-25, I have learnt so much about archaeology, the history of Cookham and the day to day workings on a dig site. It’s been an amazing experience and I feel very privileged to have witnessed so many special moments with students, volunteers and archaeologists from the University of Reading.
I have also met many artists who would like to work on an archaeological project and I have been keen to provide opportunities for creative people to explore at Cookham and other sites.
I wrote this guide for them and also for the Archaeologists and the wider public, to share experience and insights into the special role of an Artist in Residence.
I’m sure that this artwork document below could be added to, on bigger paper with a smaller font. This work is ongoing as we live and learn.
First exhibited at the ‘Unearthed Dialogues’, Art & Archaeology exhibition November ‘25, Archaeology Department, The University of Reading
